Surface Finishing Options for ABS Parts

Customize the texture, color, and luster of your custom ABS enclosures and functional models.

As-Machined / Printed
Raw finish directly from CNC milling or 3D printing with minor tool paths. Cost-effective choice for hidden internal structural brackets and early-stage functional validation.
Custom Spray Painting
Applies premium liquid paint in any custom Pantone or RAL color. Available in matte, satin, high-gloss, or rubberized soft-touch tactile coatings.
Bead Blasting & Satin Finish
Uses fine abrasives to eliminate tool lines, producing a uniform, glare-free matte texture that conceals fingerprints and minor surface scratches.
Plastic Electroplating (Chrome / Nickel)
ABS easily accepts chemical plating to deposit a real metal layer (bright chrome, satin nickel, or gold). Gives plastic parts a metallic sheen and higher surface hardness.
Silk Screening & Pad Printing
Applies sharp custom graphics, brand logos, button labels, and instructional text directly onto painted or raw ABS enclosure surfaces.
Chemical Vapor Smoothing
Solvent vapor process that smooths 3D-printed or machined ABS layer lines, delivering an injection-molded quality smooth and shiny surface.

Advantages and Considerations of ABS Manufacturing

Evaluate the versatile material performance and processing characteristics of ABS resin

Advantages of ABS Plastic

  • High Impact Resistance & Toughness: Absorbs high energy upon impact without shattering, making it robust for daily handling and protective housings.
  • Outstanding Machinability & Post-Processing: Cuts cleanly during CNC milling with minimal tool wear, easily glued with solvent cements, and accepts paint and chrome plating better than most plastics.
  • Excellent Cost-to-Performance Ratio: One of the most affordable engineering thermoplastics, making it the top pick for prototyping and volume enclosures.
  • Good Dimensional Stability: Low moisture absorption and stable thermal behavior ensure custom enclosures maintain tight fitment during assembly.
i

Considerations & Limitations

  • Moderate Heat Resistance: Softens at temperatures above 85–95°C. *(Solution: Upgrade to PC/ABS alloy or PEEK for continuous high-heat environments)*.
  • Susceptibility to UV Degradation: Untreated raw ABS turns yellow and becomes brittle under direct long-term sunlight. *(Solution: Apply UV-resistant paint or outdoor powder/clear coatings)*.
  • Vulnerability to Organic Solvents: Can be degraded by acetone, esters, and strong acids.

ABS Parts Manufacturing FAQs

  • CNC Machining: Best for 1 to 500 parts requiring solid production-grade material density, tight tolerances (±0.02 mm), and smooth surface finishes.

  • 3D Printing (SLA/FDM): Ideal for rapid 1-to-3-day prototype validation with complex internal geometries.

  • Injection Molding: Best for high-volume mass production (1,000+ parts) to reach the lowest unit cost.

Yes! ABS is one of the very few plastics that can easily undergo chemical etching and electroplating. We offer chrome, satin nickel, and gold electroplating, giving your ABS parts an authentic metallic luster, cool tactile feel, and enhanced scratch resistance.

Raw ABS degrades under ultraviolet (UV) radiation over time. For outdoor applications, we recommend applying a custom UV-resistant polyurethane spray coat or choosing a black UV-stabilized ABS resin grade.

Standard commercial ABS is not food-contact rated. However, we offer specialized Medical-Grade ABS (ISO 10993 compliant) and FDA-compliant ABS resins upon request for medical device housings and diagnostic instrument covers

We accept STEP (.stp / .step), IGES (.igs), and SolidWorks (.sldprt) CAD files for automated pricing and DFM analysis. If your part requires custom threads, critical snap-fit assembly tolerances, or Pantone paint matching, please also attach a 2D PDF drawing.
