Surface Finishing Options for PMMA / Acrylic Parts

Restore crystal optical transparency, enhance surface smoothness, or add decorative matte frosted effects.

As-Machined (Frosted)
Raw finish directly from precision CNC milling. Features a translucent frosted surface with minor cutter tool lines, suitable for light diffuser plates and internal structural guides.
Diamond Edge Polishing
High-speed rotary diamond tool process that eliminates cutter marks along straight edges and flat planes, yielding a crystal-clear, high-gloss optical edge.
Precision Flame Polishing
Uses a high-temperature hydrogen-oxygen flame micro-torch to quickly melt machined acrylic edges, restoring glass-like transparency for complex curved contours.
Hand Buffing & Mechanical Polishing
Multi-stage abrasive sanding followed by soft cloth wheel polishing with fine diamond compound to restore 100% optical clarity on 3D complex geometries.
Bead Blasting (Satin Frosted)
Uses fine non-contaminating abrasive media to produce a uniform satin frosted texture, ideal for LED diffusers that eliminate harsh glare points.
Silk Screening & Direct UV Printing
Applies sharp custom color graphics, corporate brand logos, measurement scales, and button labels directly onto acrylic display panels.

Advantages and Considerations of PMMA (Acrylic) Manufacturing

PMMA is the benchmark material for optical clarity, UV weatherability, and easy edge polishing.

Advantages of PMMA (Acrylic)

  • Supreme Optical Clarity (92%+ Transmittance): Delivers higher light transmittance than inorganic glass and clear Polycarbonate, making it the highest optical quality clear plastic available.
  • High Surface Hardness & Scratch Resistance: Features higher scratch resistance (pencil hardness 3H–4H) than Polycarbonate, resisting fine hairline scratches during daily handling.
  • Outstanding UV & Outdoor Weathering Resistance: Naturally resists UV degradation without yellowing, hazing, or turning brittle, making it ideal for outdoor lighting covers and marine windows.
  • Easily Polished to High Mirror Polish: Flame polishing, diamond polishing, and mechanical buffing can effortlessly restore 100% crystal optical transparency after CNC milling.

Considerations & Limitations

  • Brittle Under Sharp Impacts: Lower impact resistance than Polycarbonate; can crack or chip under extreme mechanical shock loads. *(Solution: Use Impact-Modified PMMA or Polycarbonate for bulletproof requirements)*.
  • Sensitivity to Solvents (Stress Crazing): Vulnerable to strong organic solvents like acetone, alcohol, and thinners, which can induce micro-cracks (crazing) on flame-polished surfaces.
  • Moderate Heat Deflection Temperature: Softens at temperatures above 85–100°C; not intended for continuous high-heat environments.

PMMA Parts Manufacturing FAQs

CNC milling leaves a cloudy, frosted cutter path. We apply Flame Polishing (using high-temperature hydrogen flames for contours), Diamond Edge Polishing (for straight cut edges), or multi-step hand buffing with diamond polishing compounds to restore 100% glass-like optical clarity.

  • PMMA (Acrylic): Offers higher light transmittance (92%+), superior scratch resistance (pencil hardness 3H–4H), lower material cost, and easier edge polishing. Ideal for display windows, light pipes, and medical manifolds.

  • Polycarbonate (PC): Offers extreme impact resistance (virtually unbreakable) and higher heat resistance (135°C), ideal for heavy safety guards and bulletproof-level shields.

Cast Acrylic is far superior for CNC machining and optical polishing. It has higher thermal stability, does not melt or stick to cutting bits, and exhibits higher scratch resistance. Extruded Acrylic is softer with lower thermal resistance, making it better suited for laser cutting and thermoforming.

Yes! Cast PMMA features excellent optical clarity, chemical stability against mild reagents, and bio-compatibility. We routinely machine medical microfluidic chips, liquid chromatography manifolds, and diagnostic blood-testing blocks with precision internal channels.
